This web site should provide an additional and effective way of communicating with a large number of our members. It will be an abiding principle that the site should be straightforward, uncluttered, easy to read and easy to navigate. Each main page will have the TGSOSA header and the navigation bar. The site is interactive and allows users to communicate with us and enrol as members.
How one assesses the appeal of the site is a purely subjective matter - I’ve had several goes at it to date and one is always tempted to change something - but constructive suggestions will be appreciated and, in particular, I should like to know how easily (or otherwise) you find your way through the site.
One of the main advantages will be that we should no longer need to post the printed newsletter to many of our members. The possibility exists to send the newsletter by e-mail but an attractively formatted newsletter produces a fairly large file and this would take a long time for those with dial-up (as opposed to broadband) connection to download. In any event we shall need to notify members that a new newsletter has been posted: this will mean our having to collect e-mail addresses. Although many members have written their e-mail addresses on membership forms we have never recorded them for the simple reason that it is a time-consuming and error-prone procedure. Members should use the form on the Contacts page to let us know their e-mail addresses and also to indicate their willingness or otherwise to forego delivery of the Newsletter by post.
It is the view of the Committee that, since the subscription fee is very low, it should not be necessary to have a two-tier system - web space is not free but much cheaper than ‘snail mail’. The decision whether to forego postal delivery is for each member to make.
A technical matter: the web site is based on a page 800 pixels wide and 600 pixels deep. On a monitor with a resolution of 1024 x 768 the “Home” page will occupy 80% of the width of the screen and 100% of the depth. On a screen with a resolution of 800 x 600 the “Home” page will occupy 100% of the width and will require the use of the scroll bar on all pages.
