450 YEARS OF TADCASTER GRAMMAR SCHOOL

By Laurence Myers

This new history of the School has been published by TGSOSA  to mark the 450th anniversary of the school’s foundation. It was launched at the 2007 reunion. We still have a few copies available at a cost of £1 per copy.

To obtain a copy please send a cheque and a stamped addressed C5 envelope to
Geoff Beevors, TGSOSA, 1 Ash Hill Drive, Shadwell, Leeds. LS17 8JT  or telephone
Gerry Nutton on 01937 832167

Please note that, if you require more than one copy, the standard small letter weight is 100 grams. Putting 3 or more copies in one envelope will probably incur an excess postage charge. You are therefore advised not to ask for more than two copies in one envelope.

The reunion held on 3rd July 2010 at Toulston was a great success. Despite counter attractions such as Wimbledon, World Cup football and the Copmanthorpe carnival there was a good attendance of well over 100 former students. Though the attendance was not, by any means, the highest on record, the general feeling was that there was a particularly warm and friendly atmosphere. It was a beautiful Summer afternoon and visitors were allowed to see Toulston at its best. The highlight of the afternoon was the welcome and talk given by Headteacher Geoff Mitchell.

Since the school was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the school’s move to Toulston members were able to see a scaled down version of the exhibition of school history and memorabilia which TGSOSA put on in 2007. This latest presentation was put on earlier than planned so that members were able to see it. For this we are indebted to the school librarian, Valerie Brett, who mounted the exhibition.

On previous occasions we have engaged outside caterers to provide refreshments and bar facilities but unfortunately they have  not found it to be sufficiently profitable. Our small committee is usually too busy at reunions to man the facilities but thanks to Richard Sweeting(bar) and Inge Ellis and her husband Brian (teas) we managed to supply the refreshments and even make a small profit.
